A hard fought but thoroughly well earned win at Anfield as the Reds ensured Steven Gerrard's much hyped homecoming wasn't a successful one.

Mo Salah won and converted a penalty to settle the contest but it was a decision that didn't best please Gerrard who also felt aggrieved at Villa being denied a spot kick of their own late on.
